Tadej Pogacar wraps up Tour de France victory to seal historic double…….

Vingegaard is sixth in the Tour, seventeen seconds behind the champion.

Following in the footsteps of the late Marco Pantani, Tadej Pogacar triumphed in the 2024 Tour’s last time trial in Nice to swaggerly claim the first Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double of the twenty-first century.

Pogacar has now joined an exclusive group of double winners, although none have done so with as much flair or in the modern period. His cumulative lead throughout the two Grand Tours, which span about 7,000km, has been well over 16 minutes, and he has led the Giro or Tour for 39 days in all.

The final race of the 2024 Tour featured the top three riders, Pogacar, Jonas Viggenard, the reigning champion, and rookie Remco Evenepoel. It took place on the Côte d’Azur’s corniche roads and followed the script, with the Slovenian taking the lead once more.
Pogacar defeated Evenepoel by 1:14 and Vingegaard by 1 minute 03 seconds in the time trial from Monaco to Nice. The Dane, who won the race in 2022 and 2023, lost the race overall by 6:17.

Pantani’s Giro-Tour double occurred 25 years ago, during a turbulent and dishonest period marred by persistent doping accusations. However, Pogacar’s takes place in a different era—a highly technologically advanced and commercialized sport that has been globalized by Netflix and is dominated by nation-state sponsors—and has welcomed success stories from hitherto untapped regions like Slovenia, Eritrea, and Ecuador.
